IAA OBSERVES 20 YEARS OF PASSAGE OF ACT WITH A SYMPOSIUM

The Internal Audit Agency as part of the Internal Audit Awareness Week and 20 years of the passing of the Internal Audit Agency Act,2003, (Act 658) celebration, organised a symposium on 29th March, 2023 under the theme, “Relevance of Preventing Corruption in Ghana Through Institutional Collaboration: Role of The Internal Auditor.”

Speakers at the symposium were Mr. Richard Quayson, Deputy Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The Board Chairman of the Internal Audit Board, Mr. J.B. Winful, in his opening address highlighted the need to move from minimising corruption to preventing corruption. He discussed the importance of ensuring effective economic management, adding that the Internal Audit Agency has organised numerous conferences to create a common platform for internal auditors to share ideas. He added that Internal Auditors should not wait for corruption to occur but should be proactive and collaborate with stakeholders to identify early warning signs. In discussing democracy, he stated that democracy includes protecting national resources in a bid to eradicate poverty.

Mr. Ernest Wiafe an Executive of the Internal Auditors Association, Ghana (MDAs), also addressed the audience bemoaning the Conditions of Service and salaries of Internal Auditors. He highlighted the risks accompanying the job of an Internal auditor and pleaded with Management of IAA to ensure the amendment the existing Act to improve the salaries and conditions of service of internal auditors in the public sector.

Mr. Ayivi a representative of the MMDAs and RCCs also addressed the audience. He, like the MDA representative, bemoaned the Conditions of Service of Internal Auditors and likened the average internal auditor to a physician whereas the external auditor is a pathologist.

Mr. Quayson gave insights into strides made by CHRAJ in the fight against corruption. He explained that the fight against corruption is not limited to public institutions. He added that although the fight against corruption is not easy, it is worth it.

COP Maame Tiwaa in her speech, called for the independence of Internal Auditors and the rationalization of their salaries and Conditions of Service. She stated that although brilliant, the prospects of Ghana as a nation are hampered by corruption which has eaten into the grassroot of the society. She stated that the Internal Audit Agency is a gateway and control system to prevent corruption. She encouraged Internal Auditors present to practice good values and exhibit integrity.

Mr. Winful in his closing remarks thanked the speakers for their insightful presentations and pointed out the importance of financial management in an effort to live within one’s means. Quoting the popular adage: “a good name is better than riches,” he admonished Internal Auditors to change their mindset and take pride in the work they do.

Guests present include the Chairman of the Internal Audit Board, Mr. Joseph Winful, Mr. Ransford Agyei, former Ag. Director-General of IAA and Internal Auditors from Heads of Covered and Specified Entities across the country. The event was moderated by Mr. Kafui Dey.
