The Director-General of the Internal Audit Agency (IAA), Mr. Thomas A. Thompson Aryee, inaugurated the Audit Committee of the Ministry of Roads and Highways on 7th July, 2026. The ceremony, which was held at the Ministry, saw Mrs. Anastasia Menyawovor Adjoa elected Chairperson of the five-member committee. The event marked another step towards strengthening accountability and good governance within the institution.
In his opening remarks, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, underscored the importance of the Audit Committee in ensuring prudent management of public resources and urged Management and staff to pay close attention to issues raised by internal auditors, stressing that compliance must begin within the institution.
He also noted that the Ministry accounts for about 60 per cent of government capital expenditure, making it imperative that every public cedi is spent for its intended purpose and in accordance with approved procedures to minimise financial infractions.
Delivering his address, Mr. Thompson-Aryee reminded members that the amended Public Financial Management Act places a responsibility on them to exercise caution in handling and disclosing information obtained in the course of their duties.
He further emphasised that while internal auditors provide recommendations to improve governance and accountability, implementing those recommendations remains the responsibility of management. He also encouraged the Ministry to improve its compliance performance from its current moderate rating to a high compliance level.
In her acceptance remarks, the newly elected Chairperson, Mrs. Anastasia Menyawovor, pledged the Committee’s commitment to supporting the institution’s internal audit function and ensuring it adds value to its operations. Outgoing Chairman, Mr. Ransford Adjei, formally handed over to the new Committee and urged members to strengthen risk management practices and maintain focus on value-for-money auditing and compliance.
In his closing remarks, Hon. Agbodza congratulated members and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working with the Internal Audit Agency to improve its compliance performance.
