Mr. Thomas A. Thompson-Aryee, Director-General of the Internal Audit Agency (IAA), inaugurated the Audit Committee of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Council on 16th June,2026. The ceremony was chaired by Prof. George K. Oduro, Special Advisor to the Minister for Education, who represented the Director-General of GES, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis.
In his opening remarks, the Special Advisor to the Minister for Education stated that he regarded the Audit Committee as a critical partner that safeguards the interests of the institution. He further outlined the Committee’s key responsibilities, which include ensuring the implementation of audit recommendations, advising the Council on its strategic direction, and supporting Management in strengthening internal control systems.
Delivering his address, Mr. Thompson-Aryee commended the Ghana Education Service (GES) for its collaboration with the Agency in establishing Zonal Audit Committees within schools. He noted that this initiative would significantly contribute to reducing malfeasance in the public sector and minimize the likelihood of the Service being cited before the Public Accounts Committee. He further emphasized that the implementation of audit recommendations remains a key priority of the Minister for Finance.
The Director-General highlighted the institution’s failure to submit the Commitment Control Compliance Checklist Report and noted that this constituted a compliance breach. He further encouraged Management to facilitate opportunities for the Audit Committee to engage with the GES Council and provide updates on its activities and achievements.
In his closing remarks, Prof. Oduro stated that the institution had noted the observations made by Mr. Thompson-Aryee, particularly those relating to reporting requirements. He extended his best wishes to the members of the Audit Committee and wished successful and impactful tenure.
