The Acting Director-General of the Internal Audit Agency (IAA), Mr. Conrad Z. Dumbah, has called on internal auditors in the Local Government Service to move beyond routine compliance checks and focus on improving institutional performance, safeguarding public resources and delivering better outcomes for citizens.

Speaking as guest speaker at the 9th Annual Conference of the Internal Auditors’ Association of the Local Government Service on 14th October 2026, Mr. Dumbah said auditors must identify the risks and root causes of audit findings and work with management to implement lasting solutions. The Conference, which runs from 13th to 16th October, is being held under the theme, “Internal Auditors Association as a Catalyst for Ghana’s Reset Agenda: Compliance to Impact.” The Head of Service of the Local Government Service, Prof. Lord Mensah, attended as guest of honour.

Mr. Dumbah noted that internal auditing must evolve from a tick-box exercise into a results-oriented function that helps institutions manage risks, improve efficiency and use public resources responsibly.

He also highlighted the importance of professionalism, competence and continuous professional development, urging auditors to embrace data and technology, improve their reporting practices, meet the required deadlines for submitting quarterly internal audit reports and play an active role in advancing the profession. He reaffirmed the IAA’s commitment to strengthening the profession through training and other professional development initiatives.

The Conference provided an opportunity for practitioners to exchange experiences and explore ways to improve the impact of internal auditing in local government.
